We love Him because He first loved Us (Part 1 of 5)

Hello Friends!

Welcome to a new 5-part series titledWe love Him because He first loved Us. This series will investigate the often misunderstood doctrine of the sovereignty of God’s saving purpose based on the Word of God.

Please join us over the next five weeks as we learn more about this very important truth.

Let’s begin our study with the first lesson: THE PERVERSENESS OF OUR FALLEN STATE…

We love Him because He first loved Us (Part 1 of 5)

Old hymns are wonderful, aren’t they?. One that may be familiar to you is, “Oh, How I love Jesus!” The closing line of that song is intriguing: “Oh, how I love Jesus… because He first loved me.” If you are indeed familiar with this beautiful hymn, you no doubt know that this is also what the Apostle John says in the Bible:
We love Him, because He first loved us1 John 4:19
Look at it closely and you’ll see at least five great doctrinal lessons this verse teaches us. Today, we’ll consider the first one; then we’ll look at the other four in the coming weeks.

For some reason, before becoming a Christian, hearing the chorus of that song had always struck me as a strange reason for loving Jesus. Of course, in my unregenerate state, I had almost no understanding whatsoever of the love of Jesus Christ for me. He loved me but was I supposed to love Him too? Besides, loving Him just because He loved me first didn’t seem like a particularly noble or admirable reason for loving Him. Love is supposed to be unconditional, isn’t it? So “because He first loved me” never sounded like quite an adequate motive for loving Jesus.

Incidentally, there’s a minor textual issue in this verse that I ought to mention. In the King James and New King James Versions, this verse is translated just the way I have read it:We love Him, because He first loved us.That’s because the Greek texts from which the King James Version was translated include the object Him.

It doesn’t matter which reading you prefer, because our capacity for loving God is dependent on our ability to have true love. If we couldn’t love at all, we certainly couldn’t love God. Therefore, the meaning of this verse includes the truth thatWe love Him, because He first loved us.”

Think with me for a moment about the implications of that phrase at the end:He first loved us.” In other words, there was a time when we didn’t love Him. That is the very essence of sinful depravity, isn’t it? A failure to love God as we ought. Nothing is more utterly and totally depraved than a heart devoid of love for God. As the Apostle Paul also said:
The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God – Romans 8:7
That describes a hopeless state of utter inability to love God, obey His commands or to please Him. That is the state of all whose hearts have not been renewed by Jesus Christ.

This is a particularly poignant expression coming from the apostle John, who in his gospel refers to himself repeatedly as “that disciple whom Jesus loved.” Notice that in John’s own mind, Jesus’ love for him completely defined who he was.

Why was this such a prominent feature in John’s thinking? I think he gives us a clue right here in our verse. The reason he was so preoccupied with the love of Christ for him is that he knew that love was utterly undeserved. He was keenly aware of his own sinfulness. As amazed as John was with the love of Christ for him, he must have been equally amazed at the thought that his own heart had once been devoid of any love for One who was so lovely. How can the human heart be so cold to One who is so worthy of our love? Anyone who truly appreciates the glory of Christ’s love, as John did, will be appalled and horrified at the realization that our own hearts do not love Him as we ought to. The knowledge of how perfectly He loves us produces such a sense of utter unworthiness, doesn’t it?

You can see this vividly, even at the end of John’s life, when he sees a vision of the risen Jesus Christ in the book of Revelation where he writes:
And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead – Revelation 1:17
He was literally frightened into a coma, because this vision of the glorified Christ smote him with such an overpowering sense of his own sinfulness. And in an almost involuntary response, he collapsed on his face out of fear.

That same overpowering consciousness of sin and shame is implied in the words of our verse,We love Him, because He first loved us.We are so utterly and totally depraved that if God Himself did not love us with a redeeming love, we would never have loved Him at all. If that does not fill you with a consciousness of your own sin and if it doesn’t shock you with a stark realization of the impenetrable hardness of the fallen human heart – then you need to meditate on it a little longer.

It is my hope that you can see how this verse clearly and forcefully underscores the very essence of human depravity. There is nothing more desperately wicked than a heart that fails to love God. There is nothing more blind and irrational and sinful than not loving Someone so worthy of our love. We should need no motive to love Him other than the sheer glory His perfect being. And yet, we would not love Him at all if He had not first loved us!

Remember, this is the first and great commandment:
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” – Matthew 22:37
The whole of God’s law is summarized and epitomized in that one simple rule. To break that commandment is to fail in every single point of the law. There is nothing more completely and totally wicked. And yet, our verse reminds us that we are so hopelessly and thoroughly wicked that not one of us could ever truly love God unless God Himself enabled us to do so. It means that we are totally unable to save ourselves. We have a debilitating moral inability that makes our love for Him an utter impossibility until He intervenes to give us the ability to love Him.

We cannot by sheer force of will set our hearts to love Him, because as fallen creatures we are so in love with our own sin and rebellion that our desires are twisted. Our affections are warped and hopelessly corrupted. And we are powerless to change ourselves:
Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil – Jeremiah 13:23
The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint – Isaiah 1:5
The [unregenerate] heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked—who can possibly understand it? – Jeremiah 17:9
Our hearts are poisoned by sin, and that is why we do not and cannot love God on our own. That is precisely what is meant by total depravity. It’s not that we are as evil as we could possibly be, but that evil has infected us totally—in every part of our soul—so that we are incapable of righteous desires and holy motives and loving affections toward God. I hope you can see how this truth is implied in this text…

Thank you for reading! Don’t miss next week’s edition as we investigate lesson #2…

Revelation Chapter 22‏

Hello Friends!

Welcome back! During this week’s fellowship time, we’ll conclude our study of Revelation.

Revelation Chapter 22

This week we will investigate chapter 22 in our journey of the end times.

We have at last reached the finish line to this wonderful book of future events! The conclusion of this great book of the Bible is now at hand – Praise the Lord!

As we discussed, these final two chapters only provide us with the beginning of all new things – a glimpse into the future. There will never be an end to the great things the Father has revealed to us – Christians – through His Son, Jesus Christ. As written by the Apostle Paul:
…eye has not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him – 1 Corinthians 2:9
Life in the New Jerusalem

The first thing we see is that the angel shows the Apostle John the “river” of life in the new Jerusalem:
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb – Revelation 22:1
This “river” has some of the same characteristics as the one described in the book of Ezekiel during the 1000-Year Millennial Kingdom of Jesus Christ:
Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side. And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river. When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt – Ezekiel 47:1-11
The “river of water of life” originates from the throne of God and the “Lamb.” It is “clear as crystal” and flows down the middle of the great street of the city. What differentiates this “river of water of life” with the “river” extending from Christ's Millennial Temple is that the New Jerusalem is eternal, the Millennial “river” is not.

The “tree of life” is seen on “either side of the river” of life in the New Jerusalem:
In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations – Revelation 22:2
This is also in contrast to what Ezekiel observed in his visions of the Millennial Kingdom where the “trees” that lined the river that originated from the Millennial Temple. These were not the “the tree of life” but they were a healing “medicine”:
Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine Ezekiel 47:12
The “tree of life” is the only tree observed by John within the New Jerusalem. It also exhibits the special property of bearing 12 different “crops” of spiritual fruit – one type of “fruit every month.” The “tree of life” and its “monthly cycle” of fruit bearing serves as an eternal timepiece measuring the passing of months and years by the type of fruit it yields. Since there will be no night in the city and therefore no solar cycle to discern time, the “the tree of life” will serve that function for eternity future.

The Lord declares that there will be “no more curse” and that the “throne of God and of the Lamb” will be within the New Jerusalem and moved there, as had been revealed to Moses, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and Daniel:
And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads – Revelation 22:3-4
The Curse – Original Sin – began with the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (see Genesis chapter 3) and consisted of:
  • The curse on the serpent – with the prophesy of Jesus Christ's work on the cross – putting an end to Satan's rule
  • The curse on the woman – with increase pain in childbirth – the desire for her husband’s headship over her
  • The curse on the man – the ground was cursed – that led to painful toil, thorns and thistles to grow in the fields and sweat would be required to work for his food
  • Adam and all mankind would then suffer physical death – and spiritual death – because of their disobedience, evident by clothing themselves to hide their nakedness from the Lord
  • Man was banished from the garden of Eden so that he could not eat of the tree of life – remaining in his sins for eternity
These curses have plagued all mankind since the Fall of Adam until the time in the future that God will make all things new and remove the curses. Interesting to note is the fact that the first two chapters (Genesis 1 & 2) and the last two chapters (Revelation 22 & 23) of the Bible are the only “sinless” periods of human history.

All the intervening chapters deal with man's separation from God and His love for mankind. This love of God was demonstrated through His grace by the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ – providing the ONLY way for sinful mankind to be redeemed from sin. One can only wonder if Adam and Eve had not sinned, the Bible may have been condensed from Genesis chapters 1 & 2 leading directly to Revelation Chapters 21 & 22!
The Apostle John then reports that there will be no more “light” from the “sun” or other current sources in today’s physical universe:
There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever Revelation 22:5
The Lord God Himself “gives them light!” There will be no need for a lamp or the light from the sun. The sun and other stars across the universe may still exist. However, just as the sunlight is brighter in the earth's sky than the light emitted by other celestial bodies, our sun's light makes them invisible to the naked eye. Likewise, God's light will be so much brighter and will mask out the light emitted by any other celestial body.

Words of the Angel and of the Lord

The angel now informs John the words he had been told are “faithful and true” and the Lord announces that He is “coming quickly”:
Then he said to me, “These words are faithful and true.” And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place.“Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book”Revelation 22:6-7
Remember that the book of Revelation was addressed to the seven churches of Asia Minor – modern day Turkey – and is a vivid message for the Christian church today!

Therefore, the Lord is referring to His return for their encouragement as well as a stern warning to those who are not believers in the Lord.

John's response and other instructions

John responds to all that he has seen in these closing moments in this revelation of Jesus Christ by falling down to “worship before the feet of the angel”:
Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. Then he said to me, “See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” And he said to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand. He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still Revelation 22:8-11
Notice how John was again rebuked by the angel just as he was when he did the very same thing back in chapter 19. The angel tells John to “Worship God” – not angels!

He also tells John to notseal the words of the prophecy of this book.” This is unlike what Daniel was told when the Angel instructed him to “seal up his book. The reason is that Daniel lived at a time before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, where the attention was placed on the first advent of Jesus Christ. After the cross, the attention is directed toward the second advent of Jesus Christ when He returns to this earth to establish His 1000-Year Millennial kingdom.

The Words of the Lord

The Lord confirms that He is “coming quickly” and He is bringing His reward to everyone according to their “work” – which is not to be confused with salvation:
And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie – Revelation 22:12-15
In this section He again affirms that He is the “Alpha and the Omega” the “Beginning and the End” the “First and the Last”.

The Lord is the one who began human activity in this world and He will be the one who has finished His work in addressing sin and to judge every person who was ever born into this world – believers and unbelievers. When the Lord returns, He will bless those who believe on Him and are called by His name. They will have the right to the tree of life. Those whom He blessed are the ones who will enter the New Jerusalem. Again, the Lord is confirming that outside of His eternal kingdom – within the “Lake of Fire” – are dogs, sorcerers, whoremongers, murderers, idolaters and those who are liars. These will continue to live in that place – hell – under horrific conditions and they will be permanently separated from God and His saints for all eternity future.

Here the Lord is confirming that He sent the angel to give this testimony (book of Revelation) to the “churches” which of course is the purpose for this book:
I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star Revelation 22:16
By this time, the major prophecies fulfilled are:
  • Jesus Christ – the “Root” of David – the fulfillment of the Lion of Judah (see Genesis 49:8-10)
  • Jesus Christ – the “Offspring” of David – fulfills the promises to him (see Ezekiel 21:25-27, Isaiah 11:1-5 & 10-11 and Romans 15:8-12)
  • Jesus Christ – the “Bright and Morning Star – from the oracle of Balaam (see Numbers 24:15-17)
The Holy Spirit and the bride encourage all to “come” and partake of this great gift God has given to all mankind:
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely Revelation 22:17
We will recall that this same encouragement was also found in the letters to the churches where there were references to “he who overcomes.” The “bride” is the church – the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit was also promised to empower the church.

This encouragement is reinforced to all who “hears” or who “thirsts” for the Truth come and share in the free gift of the “water of life” – which is found only in Jesus Christ!

A sober warning is given to anyone who “adds” or “takes away” from the “words of the book of this prophecy” – they will suffer dire consequences:
For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book Revelation 22:18-19
This is a complete and consistent warning to the church to live on the strong foundation of the Lord’s Word!

The consequences for not heeding these warnings is to have God “take away his part from the Book of Life” as well as “the holy city” and the things which are “written in this book” of promise!

I Am Coming Quickly!

Finally, the Lord Jesus Christ “testifies to these things” through the angel, to John, to us today – He is “coming quickly”:
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen – Revelation 22:20-21
Although almost two millennia have passed since the writing of the book of Revelation, the events described here will begin rapidly and without deviation of any kind. This represents the third repetition of the phrase “coming soon” in this chapter alone! This illustrates the desire and expectation of entering into this New Creation with His church and all His saints.

The Apostle John inserts his “Amen” and earnest prayer – “come, Lord Jesus!” This plea was also written by the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians:
If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come! – 1 Corinthians 16:22
Paul expressed his earnest expectation that the Lord would come soon. Even in his day, the word “accursed” – written in the Aramaic language – was a very stern attribution to non-believers as “anathema” (a person doomed to destruction) – literally translated, means “go to hell!

There are only two eternal options:

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and look forward to His coming – Heaven
Or…
Be separated from Him for eternity and face an eternal doomed existence – Hell

John then finalizes this eschatological masterpiece with the salutation to all God’s peopleMaranatha! Come Lord Jesus!

With this information as a foundation for your studies, please read through Chapter 22 of Revelation.

Revelation Chapter 21‏

Hello Friends!

Welcome back! During this week’s fellowship time, we’ll continue our study of Revelation.

Revelation Chapter 21

This week we will investigate chapter 21 in our journey of the end times.

The conclusion of this great book of the Bible is now close at hand via this chapter and the next. The Apostle John is viewing all of these things that are set for eternity future from the vantage point of the New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem. The description of the Capital City of Heaven begins in chapter 21 and runs all the way to chapter 22 verse 5!

These two chapters provide a view that is not widely written of concerning the eternal future for every person whose name is written in the “Lamb’s book of life.” There are some other passages in scripture that look forward to this time. Some of the passages that do describe this future are similar to the Apostle Paul writing to the Romans, where he said that this is the time that all creation has been waiting for:
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance Romans 8:18-25
The beginning of future eternity is described here – the most glorious time with permanence for all who are in Jesus Christ. This time fulfills all that the Lord had intended for His people and the desire of His heart that He saw when He laid down His life willingly for us sinners! Because of the great love of God – all believers have been brought together in Jesus Christ. We will be able to enjoy our rest in His presence and in His glory!

In fact, the Apostle Paul also referred to these times when he wrote to the church in Ephesus:
That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him Ephesians 1:10
As we discovered in chapter 20, it concluded God’s plan of redemption for mankind and judgment. By the time we arrive here in chapter 21, the following end-times events will have occurred:
  • The Rapture of the church has passed
  • The Tribulation period of judgment on the earth – death and destruction has passed
  • The great battle of Armageddon has passed
  • The destruction of the Day of the Lord has passed
  • The thousand-year Millennial Kingdom has passed
  • All sinners are in the eternal Lake of Fire sent there from the Great White Throne Judgment
  • Heaven and earth have been “uncreated” due to the holocausts of God’s righteous wrath and judgment
The passing away of the heavens and earth is the “great division” between the past era and the future eternity spoken of by Jesus Christ Himself:
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away Matthew 24:35
God will totally erase any remnant of the past fallen creation. Think about it: All of our satellites which we have sent into deep space will be destroyed. There will be no fossil record or archaeological artifacts to discover to provide a record of man's activities and his sinful ways in general. Instead, we will be looking forward to see all of the creative works God will continue to do in this new Earth and Heaven.

We have seen the vision of the doomed, the damned and the unblessed. We have felt the scorch of eternal hell and the isolation of separation and the relentless pain of everlasting punishment. John further observes that there are no more seas – which in scripture have served as a natural barrier to nations intermingling and an impediment to nations interacting with one another. The seas have also been associated with the sinful will of man. These have all been reduced by divine destruction. God has recreated the New Heaven and the New Earth which is known as the Eternal State.

All Things Made New

The Apostle John now sees a new heaven and new earth and reports that both had “had passed away”:
Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more seaRevelation 21:1
Now the vision is of the domain of the blessed. The final eternal home of all the redeemed – beautiful New Heaven and New Earth!

And in the middle of it we find this diamond jewel capital city called the New Jerusalem. Time as we know it is over and eternity is resumed. John sees the New Jerusalem coming down from heaven. However, note that it does not say that it comes to reside on earth. What he does describe in this verse is the beauty of the “holy city”:
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God” Revelation 21:2-3
John hears a loud voice from the throne – God's voice – announcing three very important and unique relationships:
  • The tabernacle of God is with men
  • He will dwell with them
  • They shall be His people
The Lord first walked in the garden with Adam and Eve before sin entered into the world – separating man from God – which only the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross could settle once and for all!

John then hears the loud voice of the Lord from the throne describing aspects of this new environment that He prepared for eternity future:
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful” Revelation 21:4-5
In the new heaven and new earth there are:
  • No more tears
  • No moredeath
  • No moresorrow
  • No morecrying
  • No morepain
The old order of things has passed away. All “things” we knew in the world are no more. God affirms to John – “Behold, I make all things new!

It Is Done

John then tells us that Jesus Christ proclaims:
And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son Revelation 21:6-7
What is “done” here? All the work God had done to restore mankind to Himself since Adam’s fall in the Garden of Eden exposed in Genesis chapter 3.

The Lord also reiterates His title as the “Alpha” and the “Omega” such as was first revealed earlier in the first chapter. The Lord then lists those who will not take part of this “new heaven” and “new earth” creation:
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death Revelation 21:8
Their part is in the “lake which burns with fire and brimstone” which is equated to the “second death” – Anyone cast into the “Lake of Fire” will be there eternally.

The New Jerusalem

John is then taken in the spirit to another location – a great, high mountain – to witness the descending “great city, the holy Jerusalem” coming “out of heaven from God.” An angel associated with the group of seven that poured out the Bowl judgments of chapter 16 onto the unbelieving world now shows John the “bride” – the “Lamb’s wife” – which is the place of her dwelling:
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God Revelation 21:9-10
The “holy Jerusalem“ is then seen by John to shine brilliantly like the glory of God and with the quality of a very “precious stone” jewel:
…having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb Revelation 21:11-14
  • The city has a ”high wall” with ”twelve gates” with angels” at the gates
  • There are three gates on each side of the city – north”, south”, east” & west”
  • On each gate is written the names of the ”twelve tribes” of Israel
  • The city has ”twelve foundations” named after the ”twelve apostles” of the Lamb”
The angel then displays a “gold reed to measure the city” which is “laid out” like a cube:
And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass Revelation 21:15-21
Although we cannot to be dogmatic about the following thought, it appears that the holy city is located above the earth so that the light from God can shine upon the world, as there will be no night in the city. Whether or not earth will experience an evening is not known. However, with God’s light beaming from the New Jerusalem, the notion of a nearly equal division of night and day will probably not occur as we experience in this world. This may indicate that light and other physical properties may be quite different than what we observe today – this side of Heaven.

Fun fact: In US measurements, the footprint of the new Jerusalem is about 1,500 miles square and could cover the entire eastern half of the United States! In fact, if one were to envelop the holy city in a crystal sphere such as a “snow  globe” the size of that sphere would have to be about 2% larger than our moon’s diameter – about 2,159 miles. If there were a sphere enclosing the holy city, it would have to be about 2,598 miles in diameter!

No More Temple

John continues to remark on what he sees. Notably, there is no temple in the city:
But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life Revelation 21:22-27
Recall that during the Seven Year Tribulation period, John reported seeing the temple of God and His throne where as John could see into the Holy of Holies. He was quite familiar with what the temple looked like, so its absence would be obvious to him. Instead, the “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” and reside with mankind. Unlike times past and the future 1000-Year Millennial Kingdom, the temple was the central focus of the Jewish people, where they provided blood sacrifices to the Lord. In the “new heaven”, “new earth, and “new Jerusalem” there will be no sacrifices that are either observed by John or recorded to occur.

John also observes that the “city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it” because the glory of God gives the light and the “Lamb is its light” – As a result:
  • The nations of the earth will walk by God’s light
  • The kings of the earth will bring their splendor
  • The gates to the city will never be shut
  • Nothing impure will ever enter into it
  • Only those whose name written in the Lamb’s book of life will enter
Final Points:

A possible construct of the saints during eternity future may be as follows:
The Church – made up of believing Jews and Gentiles in their resurrected, glorified bodies – may reside in the “holy city, New Jerusalem” with Jesus Christ, the Groom.

The Old Testament saints – in their resurrected, glorified bodies – may reside on the “new earth” enjoying all of the fulfilled promises of God made to them, along with those believers who lived through the 1000-Year Millennial Kingdom

Either way, the whole economy of living in eternity for the saints is so foreign to what we know today, one can only imagine what it will be like – Praise the Lord Jesus Christ! Maranatha!
