The Roman’s Road to Righteousness (Chapter 13:1-7)‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏

Hello Friends!

Welcome Back! Let’s continue our journey through the book of Romans – The Romans Road to Righteousness.

The Roman’s Road to Righteousness (Chapter 13:1-7)

This week we will begin reading chapter 13, verses 1-7 as we consider our Biblical responsibility of Submission to Government…

These seven verses that we will be considering this week outline the Christian's responsibility to God-ordained “government.” This is the most clear, direct, straightforward and precise passage in all of the New Testament on this subject and is an extremely important one for us to understand. Christians have always had to face this issue – and often struggle with it. The true church has found itself in all kinds of “places,” in all kinds of “governments,” under all kinds of “rulers,” with all kinds of perspectives and forms of “leading” and “ruling.”

Historically in America we have had less trouble with this issue than many other countries have faced, such as our brethren living in China, Russia or the Middle East. Because we have lived in a somewhat Christian influenced society we've had – for the most part – the best of situations and the most benevolent of “governments.” But it hasn't always been that way for Christians as it wasn't for those in the New Testament time when this epistle was written by the Apostle Paul. Especially for the “believers” in Rome who received this very important and critical letter…

Government is by Divine Decree!

To begin with here in our passages, the Apostle Paul establishes a basic principle for the Christian’s response to all “governing authorities” appointed by “God” and he begins to lay out for us the reasons for submission to the “ordinance” of God:
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves – Romans 13:1-2
Paul states that it is strictly a matter of “obedience” to the plan of “God” in which He has “appointed” governmental “authority” which “exists” for the purpose of protection of life and property. Civil “government” – in whatever form or rule – was “determined” by God “before to be done” and is to be “obeyed” and “submitted” to by Christians. As hard as it may be to accept, the “believer” has this duty to his nation – even if his “ruler” is a Nero or a Hitler:
For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word – Acts 4:27-29
HOWEVER: If this governmental authority countermands the specific instructions of the Scriptures, we are then and only then to “disobey” by the “authority” of God’s Word!
So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge – Acts 4:18-19
But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men – Acts 5:29
Even if it should cost us much “suffering” and “shame” for the “name” of Jesus Christ – we are “counted” as “worthy” of Him:
…and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ – Acts 5:40-42
Otherwise, Paul tells us we are to be “subject” to the “ordinance” of God. And those who “resist” God’s governing “authority” will actually bring “judgment” upon “themselves” not only from the “government” but – The Lord as well!

To further expound on this point we find in Peter's first epistle that he's also writing to “believers” who are at the precipice of a major persecution under the Roman Emperor Nero. Peter is encouraging them to “submit” to the “king as supreme” or to “governors” and be ready for whatever “persecution” they're going to face. The Spirit of God gives Peter “wisdom” and “insight” to “know” that the “persecution” already beginning on an individual level is going to become a full-scale assault on the church itself! Remember, Peter is writing to the “brethren” who are living in a time of severe persecution” under the wicked “ordinance” of Rome…
Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good – 1 Peter 2:13-14
Although the onslaught of fullpersecution” hadn’t yet broken out, there was a softpersecution” that had already began and Peter knew they must be ready when it arrived!

PACIFISM? Not in the Bible!

Next we see that Paul’s instructions pertaining to “authority” indeed reinforce Peter’s thoughts:
For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil – Romans 13:3-4
GOD GIVES GOVERNMENT A SWORD! The “evil” people in society who are “unafraid of the authority” of their “government” system of which “does not bear the sword in vain” are those who “practice” much “evil” and violate the civil “law” – creating chaos. These unruly and “wicked” people must indeed “be afraid” because they will experienced the “wrath” of God’s governing “authority” to punish all dissidence.

Here in these verses Paul tells us that “government” was designed as “God’s minister to you for good” and an “avenger” to put “fear” into the hearts of the people who do “evil” things – not those who do “good” things. This earthly “authority” is God’s “chosen” instrument to “execute” His “wrath” and does not “bear the sword in vain” to him that “practices” evil – This is a very important understanding!

If you do what is “evil” you must be “afraid.” Why? Because God has given to “government” the right to “bear the sword.” And the Apostle Paul says they have a very good reason to “be afraid” – for “rulers” are to “execute wrath” on those who do “evil” things! In other words, the “government” must put “fear” in the hearts of evildoers. The word “fear” is the word phobos of which we get “phobia” – having a certain terror. Paul tells us that “fear” is not to people who do “good works” but to those who “practice” wicked works. This is reflected in the “authority” that God has set for the protection and preservation of mankind – Thank you Lord!

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO PONDER: What if “government” treats us unjustly? What if “government” takes away our freedoms? What if “government” encroaches upon us in ways that we feel are unfair or inequitable?Good questions!

The pattern that we must look to would be the example of the Apostle Paul. In Acts chapter 16 When Paul and Silas were thrown in the Philippi jail, they didn’t do anything to deserve it! The governing “magistrates“ had “laid many stripes on them” and “threw them into prison” then “charged” the jailer to “keep them securely” under arrest. And what were Paul and Silas heard doing at midnight? – Singing praises to God!
But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them – Acts 16:25
Yes, Paul and Silas were indeed treated unfairly and unjustly by the “government” at hand. And this is the same Paul who also said that we're to “submit” to the “government.” The apostle Paul knew what it was to “endureinjustice. In fact, he endured it rather frequently from place to place!

HOWEVER: On the other hand… in Acts chapter 22 Paul said to the one in “authority” who was going to lead him into a “scourging”:
Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned? – Acts 22:25
Here Paul actually reached out for his “Romancitizenship as a protection against what the “authorities” were going to “unlawfully” do to him! Therefore, whether “government” is protecting us or overstepping its bounds and acting unjustly toward us, we are “charged” to be “submissive” – By the grace of God!

Paul then says we “must” also to be “subject” to the government for “conscience” sake:
Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience sake – Romans 13:5
We must be “subject” in submission, not only to the “ordinance of God” and for “wrath's” sake but also for “conscience” sake. Why? Because we “know” it is “just” behavior and we as “believers” in Jesus Christ must hold a high regard for the civil “law” and a “conscience” commitment to “obey” God’s Word – This is our Biblical mandate and motive!

Pay Your Taxes!

Paul then finishes this important section of Scripture with the command to also support the “government” by “paying” our “taxes” because they are “attending continually” as “ministers’ of God:
For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor Romans 13:6-7
The “government” is ordained by God for the preservation of life and property. Those who “serve” us in it collect our “taxes” to keep the “government” in operation as “ministers” of God. Now that isn't to say they're all Christians or that they do everything they ought to do. But, in God’s design of “government,” they “serveHisdivine” purposes.

We must also “render” appropriate “fear” and “honor” to those in “authority” over us. “Render” is an interesting word. It's the word apodidōmi which means to give back something that you owe. That's what we do when we “pay” our “taxes” that are “due.” It isn't a gift! We owe a debt and we mustpay” it! Paul is essentially saying "Pay your taxes, your duties and your customs. Have proper respect for and show honor to your leaders" – It's our Christian obligation!

In fact, even Jesus Christ addressed this important subject matter of “Rendering to Caesar” in the Gospel accounts:
They said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's." – Matthew 22:21
And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him – Mark 12:17
That is to be the Christian's attitude from a Biblical worldview! We “render’ our “worship” to God but we are “subject“ to our “government” as well. So we must be “faithful” citizens who “submit” – as unto the Lord. The true church in our day and its pastors must not seek political reform, but rather – call for better men and women of Jesus Christ!

In closing:

Even though Christians have struggled to answer the question of what their relationship to “government” should be, they have not always addressed it Biblically. And throughout the history of the church, there have been revolutions in the name of “Christianity” where people decided that the “Christian” thing to do was to revolt militarily against the “government” in power and demand their “rights.” There have even been world-wars in the name of Christianity.

Throughout history there have been violations of civil “law” in the name of Christianity. In fact, there has even been civil “disobedience” and subversive attempts to overthrow the “powers” that be on a local, state or national level that in some cases were led by people who claimed to be Christians – all in the name of Jesus Christ! In fact, there are even some Christians I know of personally who refuse to “pay” their “taxes” because they “feel” it violates their “freedoms” – and they are now in prison… Foolishness!

Many “Christian” leaders today are calling on other “faiths” to become a part of a political lobby using high pressure tactics and Marxist “social actions” to stir up anger in protest for a revolution against our own “government.” These cobelligerents are coming together on issues of civil “authority” and civil “rights” – but would never find any “common ground” on the issue of Biblical “truth.” For example, many Protestant/Evangelicals are now aligned with the Roman Catholic religion because they have a “common cause” for “religious freedom” or “Social Justice” concerns. The co-opting of these two antithetical faiths and worldviews demonstrates the utopian preoccupation with various Jesuitical agendas where theology, doctrine and Biblical truth are set aside for the sake of a false “unity” and fleeting “freedom” –  leading to spiritual bondage!

There are also many self-professing “Christians” linking arms with various spiritual charlatans, frauds and false “prophets” for the sake of “religious freedom” to do the political lobbying that many wrongly believe will promote the “kingdom of God” here on earth. However, this is NOT the New Testament mandate for the true Bride of Jesus Christ. The Christian is NOT called anywhere in the Scriptures to “change the culture” or to preach a “Social Gospel” of “felt-needs” or “dominioism” of sorts. Our Biblical mandate is to “preach” the true savingGospel” of Jesus Christ, to show “compassion” for the “lost” and to “feed” His “sheep” – AMEN!

Other than the fact that we're to be model citizens, the Bible says nothing at all about Christians engaging in civil “change” – that is not our priority. However, that doesn't mean we're not to be involved as citizens where we can be! It's simply a question of priority… “Submit to the government” and “pay your taxes” – That's our civil Christian “duty.” Beyond that, we ought to be busy doing God’s work for His glory – that which is eternally valuable! Again, this isn't to say the other things are not important. They simply pale in comparison with the true work of the King’s Kingdom… That's the issue!

The Roman’s Road to Righteousness (Chapter 12:9-21)‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏

Hello Friends!

Welcome Back! Let’s continue our journey through the book of Romans – The Romans Road to Righteousness.

The Roman’s Road to Righteousness (Chapter 12:9-21)

This week we will conclude our reading of chapter 12, verses 9-21 as we consider Living Life as a Christian…

We now approach a very practical section of Scripture focusing on righteous and godly “living” as the true Christian way of life. This passage pertaining to personal holiness” is more revealing than anywhere else in the book of Romans. It's very simple and easy to understand. All that we've learned in the first 11 chapters and in the first section of chapter 12 about “submission” to the Lord is to prepare the true “believer” to “live” it out in “obedience” to God’s Word!

All Biblical theology has as its ultimate end that we might “live” to the “glory of God” in Jesus Christ. All Biblical doctrine is to result in proper “sacrifice” and “reasonable service” to Jesus Christ! God is working on the inside of the “believer” to do His perfect “will” and to fulfill Hisgood pleasure” on the outside of the “believer.” This is the true act of “spiritual worship” to God! Therefore, we are “called” to “live” our “redeemed” lives on the outside through what we already are on the inside Sanctification!

Behave Like a Christian!

Here in these passages the Apostle Paul begins with three basic attributes of the “obedient” Christian life:
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good – Romans 12:9
This verse shows us that these traits are to be evident in our lives:

We “love” without “hypocrisy

We “abhor” all “evil”

We “cling” to what is “good

In God’s sight, these attributes are absolutely essential in our “walk” as “believers” with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Next Paul encompasses another dimension. Not just to us personally… but to “one another” in serving the “saints” of God:
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality – Romans 12:10-13
The word "kindly affectionate" is a very interesting word in the Greek – philostorgē. It's a combination of two words both meaning “love.” We could translate it "be lovingly loving." The two words are phileō which means a “warm affectionate love” and storgē which means a “natural family love.” In other words, Christians ought to have a warm family “love” for “one another” in Jesus Christ.

Paul also uses “brotherly love” – phila-adelphos – to “love as if other “believers” were intimately associated with you as kindred. This is not just a theologicallove” of theory. This is a true, tender, kind, caring, concerned and affectionate “love” for each other. It is the pure “love” of those who “belong” to Jesus Christ! In other words, we ought to be marked by a natural, non-sensual “love” of which we share with all “believers.” This is an eternal bond that stretches beyond culture, time and circumstances. Even though we may have no prior history or knowledge of commonness in terms of lifestyle, likes or dislikes, there is an immediate sense of “brotherly love” and “kindly” affection with “another” who belongs to the true family of God! – Thank you Lord!

There must also be intensity in the Christian life – “not lagging in diligence” but “fervent in spirit” as we are “serving the Lord” and each other. There's no room for laziness in our work for our Lord Jesus Christ! Our “reasonable service” demands a “spirit” that is moving… The Christian life ought to be filled with enthusiasm, zeal, excitement and the truejoy of the Lord” – With total focused and caring effort!

Next Paul widens the circle of this important discussion to address our “mind toward one another” alike:
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion – Romans 12:14-16
Should anyone “persecute” us, we are to “bless” and not “curse” them. We are to “live” by “blessing” the people who treat us with “evil” intention. As difficult as this often is – that is our Christian distinction from the satanic “world” system. We also are to “rejoice” and “weep” together with others in true Christian sympathy – being of the “same mind toward one another.” We also must not be a “respecter of persons” by “playing up” to certain kinds of people or “high things” but to think of everyone equally – made in the “image” of God! Treat everyone the same – whether they are “wealthy” or “humble” in means. And we must not be “wise” in our “own opinion.” In other words, don’t become “wise” with yourself – thinking you know everything or are better than other people. There is no room for social, intellectual or aristocracy here! There is no “caste system” in the “body” of Jesus Christ – The way it ought to be!

Then Paul widens the circle of this discussion even further to address our living “peaceably” among “all” men:
Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men – Romans 12:17-18
Here Paul is saying: “I want you to “live peaceably,” but I do recognize a few things... Do it if it’s ‘possible’.” After all, there are some people we truly try to live “peaceably” with but it’s simply not possible due to our “sin” natures! In fact, even the Holy Spirit knew it is not alwayspossible” to do so because He also says “as much as depends on you.” However, we must obediently “strive” to “live peaceably with all men” through God’sgrace” and “power” – AMEN!

THOUGHTS TO PONDER: But you might be asking:What about the Old Testament writings found in Exodus 21, Leviticus 24 and Deuteronomy 19 where it saysan eye for an eye and a tooth for tooth’?” – Good question!

These passages are actually referring to Old Testament public law. This Mosaic prescription has to do with the “nation” of “Israel” as a Theocracy. In fact, any rational “nation” is to have a system of “justice” in place that retaliates against evil and punishes it appropriately. For example: Where there is murder, there should be the execution of a murderer – capital punishment. Where there is a theft, there should be the appropriate retribution brought upon the thief. There is to be an ‘eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ in a society as ruled by “men” in a “government” that is ordered by proper God-given governing “laws” (Paul will further address this important subject matter in chapter 13). However, this “evil for evil” prescription of retribution is not to be instituted for private revenge because that is God’s responsibility This is the important distinction Paul is making here!

Then Paul addresses the “beloved” believers with another sensitive cry from the Old Testament:
Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord – Romans 12:19
Paul essentially says “don’t you dare execute your own justice!” The word “avenge” – ekdikeō – literally means “to punish evil.” Do not personally punish people for their “evil” – we are not called to do that! So, what do we do then? Paul continues: “but rather give place to wrath” which is the “wrath” of God – let Him exercise His judgment – for “as it is written”:
“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord – Deuteronomy 32:35
We must let the Lord’s “wrath” prevail in “all” things! Then Paul finalizes his thoughts with another fascinating statement from the Old Testament book of Proverbs chapter 25, verse 21:
Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head” Romans 12:20
HISTORICAL NOTE: In Old Testament times, when a man in the Egyptian culture wanted to demonstrate his public disgrace – in a true spirit of “repentance” – he would actually carry a pan of burning “coals” on his head! This man’s literal outward act represented the “conscience” response of his “burning” pain of guilt and shame. Therefore, Paul is saying when you treat an enemy with “love” – “feed” him and “give” him “drink” – you “heap” on his “head” the “coals of fire” for the evil he has done – A burning shame!

Finally Paul closes with this command:
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good – Romans 12:21
The word “overcome” is nikaō – a Nike missile… We’ve seen this earlier in our Romans study. It literally means “victory.” We “overcome” all “evil” by doing “good” – This is distinctively Christian!

Therefore… Don’t be a victim… Be a victor! Now that’s very practical truth, isn’t it? – Yes it is!

In closing:

How does one know when he's truly a Christian and hasn’t simply succumbed some momentary emotional activity that happened in some pastime experience?

The only way you can “know” if “Jesus Christ is in you” is to “examine” your “faith” and “test” the kind of “fruit” that is being grown…
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified – 2 Corinthians 13:5
If we have indeed received Justification of “being made right” with God – “born again” – by repenting of our “sins” and placing our “faith” and “trust” in Jesus Christ alone for His “forgiveness” then there will be an out-flowing of Sanctification – a continuing willful pattern of God’s “righteousness” and “holiness” – evident in our lives. And although we may not yet see all that we would like to see, it is the expression of the deepest “desire” of our “hearts” to be “conformed” to the “image: and “likeness” of Jesus Christ through the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit – Amen!

Therefore, when we “live” a “godly” life “in” Jesus Christ, we bring “honor” to the One who “transformed” us and we attract “unbelievers” to the One who can “transform” them as well! We are “blessed” by our “obedience” to God’s Word and we bring “gloryto Him for the “blessings” we “receivefrom Him – All honor and glory to God!

It was once said about William Arnonot in his writings pertaining to the parables of Jesus Christ:
"His preaching is good. His writing is better. His living is best of all"
And so it should be with all of us as well! We too should “live out what we “learn from God’s Word through our “walk” with Jesus Christ. Why? Because more than anything else, Christianity is the onlyway” to “eternal life” of which pleases God. It is the lifestyle “pattern and “promises” of Jesus Christ found in His Word that we must follow! Our “relationship to God is not “right” if a “life” of “righteousness” and His “perfecting holiness” in the “fear” of Him is not present in our lives. It simply cannot be…
Having, therefore, these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleans ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God – 2 Corinthians 7:1
The disciplined kind of “living” of which the Apostle Paul calls us to “cleans ourselves” from the “filthiness of the flesh” is abnormal and unnatural. In fact, ”unredeemed“ human beings cannot of their own choice “live” this kind of “life.” This is super naturalliving” that can only occur when energized and empowered by the Holy Spirit through “salvation” in the “person” and “work” of Jesus Christ on the cross as the “full,” “final” and “finished” payment for the “sins” of “all” who “believe.” It is the true Christian who desires to “live by the first 11 chapters of Romans that can “live out chapter 12! Because, until we have been “justifiedby God “eternally,” have come to “know” Jesus Christ personally and “receive” the Holy Spirit “livingwithin us… It's absolutely impossible to live this way!

We must not regulate our behavior by legalistic compulsion, impulse or the “fleshly desires” of what we want in life. That is not Biblical self-discipline. For the true Christian, self-discipline is to “obey” the Word of God in the “righteousness” and “holiness” of Him who “saved” us! We must bring our desires, emotions and feelings under the full control of the Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit so we can “live” an “obedient” self-sacrificing “life” with our ultimate goal of bringing “glory” to Him. This is the self-disciplined Christian lifePraise be to God!

Please continue reading verses 9-21 of the twelfth chapter of Romans.

We are not guaranteed tomorrow – tomorrow may be too late! If you haven't yet made that most important decision of your life, won't you make Jesus Christ your personal Lord and Savior today - before it's too late? Today is the day of Salvation!

The Roman’s Road to Righteousness (Chapter 12:1-8)‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏

Hello Friends!

Welcome Back! Let’s continue our journey through the book of Romans – The Romans Road to Righteousness.

The Roman’s Road to Righteousness (Chapter 12:1-8)

This week we will begin reading chapter 12, verses 1-8 as we consider our lives as Living Sacrifices of Service to God…

Having now concluded eleven chapters of profound and thrilling doctrine defining what God has already done for every believer, the Apostle Paul does not then say, "here's what you need to get from God." He says, "here's what you need to give to God!" The key to powerful Christian living is not getting something more from God – but giving all we have to God! Above prayer, praise, giving and serving, there is one act that is supreme and all encompassing of which a believer must do in his life as a true worshiper – offering oneself as a living sacrifice!

The key to spiritual victory is not getting all you can get from God, but giving all you have to Him. There's a big difference between the two! There are many people today literally flocking into churches and spiritual “experiences” with the expressed purpose of “getting more of God.” However, the issue is not what they must get from Him. But rather, what they must give to Him – This is the supreme act of true spiritual worship!

That is the issue Paul is addressing here in these tremendous passages of Scripture…

Living Sacrifices to God

The central concept in these initial verses is the very important phrase – "a living sacrifice":
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service – Romans 12:1
Paul begins with the phrase "I beseech you.” The word "beseech" means to pleadparakaleo – “I come alongside to call you to this!” It is a word of tenderness and gentleness. Although Paul could command his readers to do these things through the authority given to him by God as a chosen Apostle of Jesus Christ, Paul instead lovingly pleads with us to heed his request in humble submission to God! And what are the “mercies of God” that Paul speaks of here? They are everything that God has already done for the “believer” listed in chapters 1 through 11 – God’s “love,” “grace,” “mercy,” “peace,” “kindness” and “salvation” in Jesus Christ – Halleluiah!

Here we also find that the primarysacrifice” we are called to “offer” to “God” is ourselves! The Lord no longer desires that animals be offered to Him, because that Old Testament era has ended – no more dead animal “sacrifices” for “sin” are accepted! Rather, He requires the “living” souls, bodies, minds and wills of Christian men and women as a “reasonable service” – our “logical debt” to God! The central act of a New Covenant “believer” is the presentation of all that we are as a "living sacrifice" to God – Praise the Lord!

Next Paul tells us that one of the very basic keys to being able to “offer” our “bodies” as an “acceptable” and “living sacrifice” to “God” is to be sure that our “mind” is being “transformed” and “renewed” by His Word:
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God – Romans 12:2
The original construct of this sentence denotes the fact that Paul’s readers were already being “conformed” to the “world” in their thinking! Therefore, Paul presents this truth with a negative thought and then a positive thought:

First ~ We must NOT be "conformed to this world!“ The word for “world“ – aion – means “age.” This is not the word kosmos meaning the planet or “creation” so to speak. This present “age” is the fallen and unredeemed philosophy of humanistic life which comes through music, movies and the media. We must not allow this present “age” to “conform” us to its godless image. Incidentally, the word “conform” denotes someone being squeezed into a mold. Rather, we are eternally “called” by the Holy Spirit to “not” allow ourselves to become “conformed” to the purposes, ethics, standards and moralities of this wicked satanic “world” system.

Second ~ We ARE to be “transformed” by the “renewing” of our “mind” through the Word of God and by “dying” to our old “sin” nature – every day! These are the two most critical and essential elements in holding to a Biblical worldview and will indeed “prove” the “good and acceptable” & “perfect will of God” for obedient Christian living!

This “spiritual” battle is won or lost in the “mind” of the “believer!” This “world” system is an instrument of Satan to promote his anti-God goals and ambitions. We see it everywhere today! The spirit of this “world” is pride, boastfulness and ugly ego. Therefore, it is with our “mind” that we make choices as to whether we will express the “new man” in the “holiness” of Jesus Christ or allow our “flesh” to act in satanic “ungodliness” toward God. Since we are to “present” our “body” and our “mind” to “God” as “acceptable” and “perfect,” it must be “renewed” day by day as an obedient act of the willLife-long Sanctification!

Service to God with Spiritual Gifts

The “grace” that was given to Paul by God, he now uses to speak an important warning to “everyone” in the Christian family. We are not to think “more highly” of ourselves than we ought, but to think “soberly” according to how God has “dealt” to every believer the “measure of faith” that has been “given” to us:
For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith – Romans 12:3
Service begins with dedication and humility. The proper godly and “soberly” attitude is the result of a self-surrender to God. If we've given everything we are to God, then we’ve nothing left of our selves. That's the attitude of true humility! It flows out of our self-centered abandonment to the perfect “will” of God. In other words, Paul says “Don't have an exaggerated opinion of your gifts.” There is no pride or false humility here! We are to “think” of ourselves according to the “grace” God has “dealt” to us with the “measure of faith” – the spiritual insights, sensitivities, capacities and comprehensions to use that spiritual “gift” – which is indeed different for every Christian.

It was the “grace” of God that ordained Paul to a position of an Apostle of Jesus Christ. Paul had received from God the directcall” to “preach” the “Gospel” and was the last Apostle personally commissioned by Jesus Christ Himself! To further this thought, Paul then describes the “many members” of the “one body” of who are “in” Jesus Christ:
For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another – Romans 12:4-5
Here we can recognize that though there is unity at the level of commitment, there is tremendous diversity at the level of “service.” Just as a physical body that has “many members,” so the spiritual body “in Christ” has “many members” as well. There is only “one body” but every “believer” is a different “member” of the whole! And not only are there “many members” without the “same function,” Paul now shares with us that there are many “gifts” of which are “differing” by the “grace” of God:
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness Romans 12:6-8
Although we all have “differing gifts” by the “grace that is given to us” by God, we must all “use them” in our unity of commitment – For His glory!
Paul also reminds us of this truth in his epistle to the Colossian church:
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ – Colossians 3:23
We are as diverse in terms of our “ministry” and “service” to God as we are in our own individual identity and personality. There are no two Christians alike and there are no two Christians of whom can “serve” the Lord alike!

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you spend as much time in the Word of God as you do in the allurements of the “world” today? Do you pray to the Lord on a consistent basis? Have you set your affections on “things above” and not on things of this “age” here on earth? Are your deep desires for the things of God? Not out of legalistic compulsion but out of a “heart” of gratitude “according to the grace” God has “given” to you? If you are not living fully for Him… WHY NOT? The “renewed mind” of the growing Christian is saturated and controlled by the Word of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the “good and acceptable and perfect will of God” for every truebeliever” – Let us serve Jesus Christ with our whole heart and mind!

Here are some practical thoughts to consider from the Apostle Paul regarding the discovery of our “gifts” from God:

Present yourself a “living sacrifice
Know you're “gifted” by God
Pray for God’s “wisdom
Seek nothing “for” yourself
Truly “examine” your heart's desires
Consider confirmation from “others
Look for the blessing of God in your “service
Willingly “serve” God and “others” with your whole “heart
When you begin to see what your “gift” is… Go for it!

In other words, cultivate your “gift” as it begins to be obvious to you – and others around you! There's tremendous distinction in all of us! God has given me a “gift” to use for His glory in the advance of His Kingdom. And God has given you a “gift” to use for His glory in the advance of His Kingdom. By His Sovereign design, whatever your “gift” is… Use it with “cheerfulness” and “diligence” unto the Lord!

In closing:

These excellent passages are the consummate conclusion to the past eleven chapters of the great doctrines outlined by the Apostle Paul here in this wonderful book of Romans. We must give back to God all that we are. And that conclusion isn’t always easy to live by to be sure! But it is absolutely necessary if we are ever to know the “fullness” of the “blessing” of God and to be able to render to Him the “reasonable service” that is due to His Name and to bring Him “glory” – This is the giving of oneself totally to the Lord.

Admittedly, I’m quite frustrated by the particular idea that is so prevalent in “Christianity” today. It is often said that to be “successful” in living the Christian life we must get something from God – when the real issue is we must give something to Him! We will never know our “gift of service” or its full potential until we have lived out the precious “promises” found in these passages. If we are not at the point of total dedication to Jesus Christ, then whatever we're doing in terms of “ministry” and “service” is not revealing to us the full potential of our true giftedness. Why? Because we're not operating at the level of total commitment to Him!

However, this is not something that a person can do unless they're truly redeemed – “born again” – and filled with the Holy Spirit. Nothing else can be offered to God if the “soul hasn't been “renewed” in Jesus Christ. An unregenerate person cannot freely give his body, his mind or his will to God. In fact, Paul tells us elsewhere in Scripture of the “natural” man:
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned – 1 Corinthians 2:14
True “worship” is not elaborate prayers. It is not liturgy. It is not tradition. It is not ritual. It is not candles, robes, stained glass, music or songs. True “worship” is not feeling spiritual “goose bumps” or “liver quivers” in a church service. True “worship” is the intelligent and willful act of giving to God our whole body, mind and soul – “holy” and “set apart” unto Him. This is a life of total “obedience” to the Word of God in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit – That's what God wants from us!

Sadly, many Christians never fully come to that “sanctified” place in life! They willfully flirt with the “world” and the “flesh.” They sow to their own personal indulgences and desires. They become willing “victims” of the philosophy, psychology and ideology of the “world” around them. They buy into the rubbish of this satanic “world” system. They entertain themselves with the trash of the “world” and they “think” as the “world” thinks. They refuse to come to the place of total commitment to Jesus Christ discussed in these sobering passages. Therefore, they forfeit the “fullness” of the “blessing” that God would have for their lives…

We need never fear the “will” of God! His wonderful ways are “good,” “acceptable” and “perfect.” Therefore, the “renewed” mind, the submissive “will” and the consecrated “body” go along with the truly redeemed “soul” in Jesus Christ – O’ sweet simplicity!
