Welcome back to our Encouraging Concepts Bible study series focused on the powerfully PROPHETIC picture portrayed in the Old Testament book of Daniel painted as a panoramic landscape of World History in FIVE successions “written” in ardent ADVANCE some 2,600 years ago… “The Book of Daniel: Prophecy PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE!”
The Book of Daniel: Prophecy PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE (Chapter 11: Verses 40-43)
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. 41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps – Daniel 11:40-43
OPENING POINTS TO PONDER: Within this poignant “passage” there appears to be a parenthetical departure from Herod himself in these fantastic four verses to which “Gabriel” practically PROPHESIES what will take place POLITICALLY throughout the waning “world“ in general. And the HISTORICAL context of these “kings” dully denotes their proximity from “Israel” as the coming Caesar Augustus entered the “glorious land” on his way down “south” storming in from the “north” region to enter “Egypt” engaged. It also rightly REVEALS the caustic Caesar character of whom we find woefully “written” about in Holy Writ by our great “God” within His nigh – New Testament Narrative!
Caesar Augustus!
“And” during that FINAL trying “time of the end” the gargantuan “kingdom” of brandish “brass” known in the halls of HISTORY as none other than Greece is brought about like a “whirlwind” by the brilliant Battle of Actium fought between Marc Antony the “king of the south” and Rome representing the rising “king of the north” as the “fourth beast” to totally takeover over Syria succinctly:
And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over – Daniel 11:40
HISTORICAL HINTS: The “time of the end” is to be HISTORICALLY understood in its complete context to which refers PROPHETICALLY to the eventual “end” of jaundice “Jerusalem” and the rudiment rise of the restless Roman rite. And with Mark Antony’s assistance, Cleopatra VII did powerfully “push” towards Herod to the “north” taking some of his territory. Incidentally, Herod and Antony were fellow friends with each other. However, Herod had hotly HATED the course Cleopatra of whom wanted his coming “kingdom” complete. Therefore, she fearlessly FORCED the horrid Herod to fiercely fight the Arabians for her of which PREVENTED him from fighting against the overt Octavian in kind. The regal reference to sailing “ships” and hurried “horsemen” along with their calvary commanding “chariots” purport a precise PROPHETIC fulfillment of HISTORY within Actium and Alexandria in kind. Octavian took particular provinces from Illyria over to Syria and down to Africa and there were also many DEFECTIONS directed to him – POWER Play!
The “king of the south” rightly represents the capitally COMBINED powerful political and military might of Marc Antony and Cleopatra VII intertwined. And Rome rightly represents the “king of the north” for they had “come” down in CONTROL of the territory tempered in Syria under the leery leadership of both Antony with Octavian in tow. According to the historian Plutarch, the coy Cleopatra conspired to EXPAND her emerging EMPIRE and tried so initially with the ASSISTANCE offered by Julius Caesar and then Marc Antony making a major “push” in the area of Greece itself. And at this same “time” it was Herod of whom was supplying this very “king” in kind. Incidentally, the young nephew of Julius Caesar named Octavian was yet another lover of Cleopatra and decidedly DEFEATED the man Marc Antony in a naval battle “with many ships” to totally take the encompassed Empire in full. Afterward, Antony and Cleopatra rashly RETREATED to the “south” and nestled themselves within Alexandria deep down in “Egypt” where both of these lavish lovers coarsely – Committed SUICIDE!
OVERTHROWN by Octavian!
“He” was like a FLOOD and absolutely nothing stood in Octavian’s way through this mighty military progress as he “entered” directly into “Israel” the great “glorious land” looming. And “many” other “countries” such as “Edom and Moab” were overtly “overthrown” along with the “chief of the children of Ammon” in the EAST of which were under Antony’s reign:
He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon – Daniel 11:41
HISTORICAL HINTS: As Octavian chose to invade “Egypt” by way of Palestine itself, Herod royally received him with abundant AID for the fight. “He” brought many “countries” under his dire DOMINION that had incited independence since the death of Alexander the Great himself. Then Octavian sordidly sent Aelius Gallus along with troops touted from Herod aimed against “Edom, Moab, and Ammon” in kind. However, they were NOT successful as “these” would entirely “escape” from “his hand” and further efforts were NOT made against them – Eager ESCAPE!
ENGULFING Egypt!
“He” was soundly SUCCESSFUL via a “stretched forth hand” in surely SECURING the contingent “countries” within the jurisdiction of Mr. Marc Antony the kindred “king of the south” including “Egypt” itself:
He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape – Daniel 11:42
HISTORICAL HINTS: Many other “countries” including “Egypt” were treacherously TAKEN by the obtrusive Octavian representing the FINAL stronghold outside of the rising Roman ramparts. The presiding power and heralded HISTORY of the Ptolemies coupled with the wild wealth of Mrs. Cleopatra and the military might of Mr. Marc Antony had eventually FAILED fully. Incidentally, “country” of enormous “Egypt” to the “south” had NOT been totally toppled by a conquering “king of the north” since the dangerous “days” of the horrible “he goat” himself – Alexander the Great!
Treasuries TAKEN!
“But” for a short “time” span, Octavian purposed by “power” had rankly RANSACKED the tremendous “treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things” of the pragmatic Ptolemies deep down in “Egypt” by decisively DEFEATING the antagonistic Antony and corrupt Cleopatra in kind:
But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps – Daniel 11:43
HISTORICAL HINTS: Although Cleopatra cohesively CONSPIRED to draw her sordid “ships” over the isthmus into the Red Sea and sail away with “Egypt’s” store of enormous wealth to some UNKNOWN land with her lover Marc Antony in hand, these sorrowful “ships” were blatantly BURNED by their arch enemies ensued. In fact, “she” covertly decided to DESTROY much of these tremendous “treasures” along with her dire DEATH directive. “But” it was Octavian of whom circumvented its demise. And even though Octavian himself did NOT ultimately take “Libya” and “Ethiopia” for his own, it was indeed accomplished aptly “at his steps” succumbed BY his grand guardian – General Cornelius Balbus!
THEOLOGICAL THOUGHTS: These vitally VAST tantamount “treasures” resourced in “Egypt” literally limit us to the HISTORICAL helm of “time” during Cleopatra’s calamities. And as for “Egypt” to the “south” itself being aptly “among the nations” rightly REMAINS a debased “desolate” and “diminished” diatribe FOREVER as the “basest of the kingdoms” considered CONDEMNED by our “Lord God” Himself…
And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be desolate forty years: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries. Yet thus saith the Lord God; At the end of forty years will I gather the Egyptians from the people whither they were scattered: And I will bring again the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation; and they shall be there a base kingdom. It shall be the basest of the kingdoms; neither shall it exalt itself any more above the nations: for I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule over the nations. And it shall be no more the confidence of the house of Israel, which bringeth their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall look after them: but they shall know that I am the Lord God – Ezekiel 29:12-16
And when Octavian had cordially celebrated his tremendous TRIUMPH touted within Rome in the year 29 B.C. the monetary interest rates FELL greatly. WHY? Because of the surplus supply verses deep demand due to the incredible INFLUX of the beautiful “booty” treacherously TAKEN from the land of “Egypt” abroad. Thus, “he” returned to Rome as the valiantly VICTORIOUS vagabond becoming the engaging Emperor and was given the trite title – “Augustus!”
PROPHETIC PROMISE: Incidentally, this is the “Caesar Augustus” of whom was PROPHESIED pointing to “those days” within the HISTORICAL narrative of the New Testament testimony “time” reference provided by Dr. Luke in kind…
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city – Luke 2:1-3
BIBLICAL BACKGROUND: And when “Caesar Augustus” had died in 14 A.D. the ranking Roman rite of ruling GOVERNMENT was passed onto his stepson named “Tiberius Caesar” during his “fifteenth year of the reign” of whom Luke would CONTINUE to refer…
Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene – Luke 3:1
In fact, as HISTORY itself heralds, Herod had personally NAMED certain stout “strong holds” he had secured such as “Antonia“ fostered within “Jerusalem” in high honor of the mighty Marc Antony along with other captured “cities” such as “Caesarea” of which was affectionately affiliated – AFTER Augustus!

Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together. Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you – Isaiah 41:21-24

In closing:
REAL REFLECTIONS: The twelve chapters of “Daniel” are powerfully PROMISED prophecies depicting the unfolding of the HISTORIC events of which will take place leading up to the literal “time” of the SECOND awaited physical “coming” of our loving “Lord Jesus Christ” back to the earth
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever – Daniel 2:44
And our SERIOUS study of these PROPHECIES will rightly REVEAL to each student of God's wonderful “Word” that the events FORETOLD some 2,600 years ago could possibly be FULFILLED in the seemingly near future…
